In 2014 my wife, a couple of friends, and I signed up for the Oxfam 100km in Brisbane. 35 hours and a world of pain later we all crossed the finish line amazed by our achievement – but vowing not to do that again… the idea just seemed horrible… at least in that first week post Oxfam!
In 2015 another 100km Oxfam team formed and when a member was injured, I jumped at the opportunity. That year we finished in 27 hours. I was hooked!
In 2016 I wanted to go for what I thought was a super ambitious Oxfam time of sub 20 hours – but I couldn’t find 3 other friends to commit and join me.
I decided to widen my race search.
I found the Glasshouse 100km Trail Race, signed up and had the most amazing adventure – finishing in a time of just over 16 hours and in 6th place.
I was now an Ultra Runner!
2017 was a big year. I completed the Mt Mee Trail Marathon, attempted to run from Brisbane to Sydney (1000km of which i only managed 240km before pulling out due to injuries) and lined up at the 100km Glasshouse Trail Race again. This time running 13 hours and missing 3rd place by just under 2 minutes! I also ran in the Toohey Forrest Half Marathon and the Misty Mountain 20Km finishing both with respectable times.
I was hungry for another challenge and yearned improvement!
I’ve found a coach and I’m now training for the Buffalo Stampede Grand Slam. That’s 3 races (25km/76km/42km) over three days with a total elevation gain of over 9000m – That’s pretty close to the height of Everest! This will be my most ambitious challenge yet and hopefully the most rewarding!
